President Obama orders the flag be flown at half-staff in honor of the Dallas attack victims

Today, President Obama ordered that the flag be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims of the attack in Dallas.

The attack occurred late last night after a demonstration rally in honor of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Sterling and Castile were killed this week by police officers.

Before the attacks, the Dallas Police Department tweeted pictures of the department’s police officers interacting with the protesters. Police officers talked to the protesters and took pictures with them.

As the rally was winding down, Micah Johnson began firing upon the police officers. Johnson, who used an AR-15 to carry out the deadly attack, had served as an Army Reservist for a total of six years and he did a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said that Johnson had shot some of the officers in the back.

Brown also said that Johnson admitted to targeting the police because he was upset about the deaths of black men at the hands of police officers.

The Dallas Police Department kept the public updated throughout the night. Early this morning, they announced on Twitter that a fifth officer had died: “It has been a devastating night. We are sad to report a fifth officer has died.”

Along with the deaths of the five police officers, there were also 12 officers and 2 civilians who were wounded during the attacks.

Flowers were placed at the Dallas Police Department’s front door. The Dallas Police Department has received support from people within the community and throughout the country.

President Obama has spoken out about the attacks. The president is quoted in a statement as saying, “What we do know is that there has been a vicious calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement. Police in Dallas were on duty, doing their jobs, keeping people safe during peaceful protests…Today is a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices that they make for us.”

For four days, the flag will be flown at half-staff from July 8, 2016, until sunset on July 12, 2016.
